A lidded fire pit and seat wall on a Pendleton patio
In one Pendleton backyard we built a lidded block fire pit on pavers and wrapped one side in a matching seat wall, so you've got a place to sit without dragging chairs out. Past the patio, a black mulch bed with boulders and shrubs runs along the privacy fence, edged in river rock.
On another Pendleton lot the gathering spot is simpler: a gravel pad we leveled against a boulder wall, where the chairs sit. Gravel, pavers or flagstone, the ground gets leveled first.

Common Questions
Where should the fire pit go on a sloped yard?
On level ground, away from the house and from low branches, on a base it cannot settle into. If your yard slopes, a retaining wall or a paver patio can make the level spot for it.
Pergola or gazebo?
A pergola has an open, slatted roof and gives partial shade. A gazebo has a solid roof and gives full cover from sun and rain. We install both. Pick by how much cover you want.
